Mars Shinshu Distillery
Hombo Shuzo obtained a license to produce whiskey in 1949, soon after the end of the war. Under the guidance of advisor Kiichiro Iwai, the company began whisky production. After the completion of the Yamanashi factory, the Mars Shinshu distillery was established in 1985 at an altitude of 798 meters at the foot of Mt. Komagatake in the Central Alps of Nagano Prefecture. It is cool and foggy, with rain and melting snow falling on the 3,000-meter-high mountains. Surrounded by beautiful and deep green forests at the foot of Mt. Komagatake in the Central Alps, the distillery stands in the silence of clear air.
Hyakusei-Fuma" means that it will not wear out over the course of a hundred generations, and it is a term that expresses the fact that it will continue to exist with its value intact forever.
This is an original series of whiskies specially selected and bottled by RUDDER LTD. from the original sake casked at Japanese distilleries under the theme of "SEEK THE ULTIMATE" to pay homage to the nearly 100-year history of whisky production in Japan.
The fifth release is "Komagatake" from the Mars Shinshu Distillery, established in 1985 by the Hombo Sake Brewery, which has been brewing sake for over 100 years since 1909. The distillation resumed in 2011 after a 19-year hiatus.
The barrel selected this time was the one with the most oaky and fruity aroma from the original distillation before the closure in 1992. While tasting this top-quality cask, which shows the balance between tradition and innovation, we wish for the further development and success of the next 100 years of Japanese whisky culture.
Tasting Comment
Nose: apple candy, monkey banana, tropical fruit hussen gum, sweet oak, vanilla and honey, sweet hints of roses wafting from the back.
Mouth: dried apricots, stewed apples, canned yellow peach syrup, marmalade, candied fruits, mixed juices and royal milk tea, candy canes, heather flowers and incense.
Finish: strawberry jam bread, apple pie, citrus peel, and tea-flavored cookies to a long finish of nutmeg, white pepper, and pepper spice.
Comment: This one barrel was selected for its most oaky and fruity aroma from the original distillation before it was closed in 1992. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the distillery has surpassed its pre-shutdown days.
*Quotes from the importer
I heard that Mars Shinshu Distillery recently changed its name to Komagatake Distillery. It is now easier to understand.
This one is still labeled "MARS SHINSHU DISTILLERY" on the label. This bottle is likely to be the final version of the SHINSHU notation as KOMAGATAKE will become the norm in the future.
An explosion of apple and tropical fruity flavors!
"Wow, has it ever been this fruity?" I couldn't help but take a second sniff. We are happy to offer you a second sniff if you order it!
For those of you whose desires are unlimited, please sniff to your heart's content!
