The history of Azumi Distillery dates back to the Yamazakura Brewery, which obtained a whiskey license in 1946. Its history as the Sasanogawa Brewery is over 300 years old, dating back to 1710, when it was founded south of Lake Inawashiro. In the 1980s, during the period of rapid economic growth after the turmoil of the postwar period, the Sasanokawa Brewery was known as the "Cherry of the North, Toa of the East, and Mars of the West," and the cherry whiskies it produced gained popularity as the leading whiskies of the North. In 2003, Higashi no Toa also closed its doors, and after many twists and turns, the Sasanokawa Brewery took custody of the Hanyu distillery's original sake. The Ichiro's Malt is the original sake that played a part in the Japanese whisky culture that was introduced to the world.

Then, in the winter of 2016, the current Azumi Distillery will start operations.

Hyakusei-Fuma" means that it will not wear out over the course of a hundred generations, and it is a term that expresses the fact that it will continue to exist with its value intact forever.

This is an original series of whiskies specially selected and bottled by RUDDER LTD. from the original sake casked at Japanese distilleries under the theme of "SEEK THE ULTIMATE" to pay homage to the nearly 100-year history of whisky production in Japan.

The sixth product is a blend of the Azumi distillery, which is part of the Yamazakura Brewery lineage that obtained a whisky license from the Sasanogawa Brewery, which was founded in 1765. It is a blend of non-peated and peated whiskies, aged in empty Amaro "Scarlet" casks for the first time in Japan, in a perfect balance. While tasting this fusion of tradition and innovation, we wish for the further development and success of Japanese whiskey culture for the next 100 years.

Tasting Comments

Nose: Cinnamon, licorice, oak and edible devil's leaf, flower store, later fruit mint candy, acerola, citrus peel. Smoke boils over with time.

Mouth: blood orange, pink grapefruit, red currant, cranberry, strawberry jam, ripe apple, ginger syrup, heather flower, fruit pepper, sweet and bitter, gradually turning spicy.

Finish: passion fruit seeds, black currant leaves, apple mint. Long finish of sansho, fresh ginger, and white pepper spice.

This whiskey is aged in the herb liqueur barrels of the Iseya Brewery, which makes the Verde Amaro liqueur used in our original cocktail, the Bourg Verdier, and has fruity nuances like ripe apples and grapefruit.
The soft spicy aroma of herbs and jam from the Amaro casks is a perfect match for the name "Hyakusei-Fuma".
